A joint message from the Board President and the Executive Director
Investing in the future of New Britain through renovations and an addition at 180 Clinton Street, is what kicked off the 2005-2006 fiscal year. With an award announcement from the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA) followed by a successful campaign to raise $2.2 million in matching funds, HRA will break ground in the fall of 2006 as we continue to raise funds for an endowment. The total funds to be raised will be $3.5 million which will ensure HRA Early Childhood Education Services in the years to come.
The staff at HRA has worked diligently and with great passion to not only make this project a reality but to continue to provide outstanding services in all of HRA's programming. With five divisions, HRA provided services to over 25,000 people last year.
HRA is moving forward in further developing its Asset Building Center in New Britain. The AB Center worked with committed and hard working volunteers to ensure those who qualified, received the Earned Income Tax Credit through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). This year HRA and its volunteers were able to return to New Britain and its local economy $1,252,044 in tax returns, which is a 40% increase over last year's total. Other services offered through the AB Center are Individual Development Accounts, Money Management Seminars, and Individual Case Management.
As HRA continues to provide and develop programming to support the needs of New Britain's residents we squarely face the challenges encountered by a decrease in funding.
With support from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, HRA has hired a fundraising consultant to help lead us through a successful endowment campaign. This effort will act as the basis for a long-term strategic fundraising plan, which will include an individual giving program. Residents of New Britain have already begun to respond to the financial needs of HRA, and we are extraordinarily grateful.
It has been a busy and exciting year, one which has laid the groundwork to continue to provide high quality, integrated services for New Britain's residents. We are both delighted and humbled to be able to lead such a fantastic organization.
Thank you for your continued support of HRA's mission: to improve the quality of life by helping people achieve economic and social potential; responding to the causes and conditions of poverty; and building strong individuals, families and communities in the greater New Britain area.
