“Isabel” (fictitious name) came to Connecticut 8 years ago from Puerto Rico with little to no income. At the age of 65, she cannot speak English and doesn’t know how to read or write. HRA’s Las Perlas Program welcomed her as a volunteer kitchen aid and maintenance assistant. After 8 years of volunteering at Las Perlas, Easter Seals hired her as a part-time kitchen aid, working 20 hours per week.
