FOR THE ELDERLY
“Lena” (fictitious name) came to one of HRA’s community case managers with an emergency – she had just received a shut-off notice from the gas company because she did not have the money to pay her bills. Her income was below poverty level and her son was only receiving social security insurance. While completing the application for energy assistance, the case manager learned that Lena was eligible for – but not receiving – food stamps (SNAP). Together, they completed applications for both energy and SNAP assistance. Later that same day, CT DSS approved Lena’s application for SNAP assistance. Relieved and grateful, Lena called to thank her case manager – with this help she could feed her family and pay her bills on time.
